3 MARS YEARS OF DUST OPTICAL DEPTH MAPPING BY OMEGA ABOVE THE SOUTH POLE. M. Vincendon

چکیده
Introduction: The varying amount of airborne dust particles observed at high latitudes directly affects the polar energy balance of Mars [1]. The behavior of aerosols above the south polar cap differs from that seen in equatorial and mid-latitude regions ([2], [3], [4]). It can however not be determined by classical thermal infrared methods of optical depth retrieval as the thermal contrast between surface ice and atmosphere is too low [5]. The strong near-IR absorptions of CO2 ice enabled the development of a new method to retrieve optical depths which requires the presence of clean CO2 ice at the surface [4]. We have extended the application of this method to 2007 and 2009 springs and summers and compared the results to the 2005 retrievals presented in [4]. This new time range includes the planet-encircling dust event of July 2007. Modeling results which aim at determining the amount of deposited dust during this global dust storm will also be presented at the conference.

متن کاملSurface Water Ice and Aerosols Evolution of 77°n, 90°e Mars Crater during Early Summer by Omega/mex
Introduction: Observations of Mars North Pole surface temperatures by Viking/IRTM lead to the discovery of the main permanent cap component: water ice. The lack of H2O ice absorption features in the visible wavelengths makes water ice properties diagnosis ambiguous when using visible data, as has been previously notified by some authors [1, 2, 3]. An increase in visible albedo can be due to a d...
متن کاملRetreat of the North Seasonal Cap of Mars Observed by Omega and Crism
Introduction: Seasonal caps play an important role for surface-atmosphere interactions on Mars, as they trap up to 25% of the atmosphere during winter. While seasonal caps are mainly constituted of CO2 ice, H2O ice and dust play an important role in their evolution. Spectral imaging observations in the near infrared provide unambiguous information on the composition of the seasonal caps as CO2 ...
متن کاملA spherical Monte-Carlo model of aerosols: Validation and first applications to Mars and Titan
The atmospheres of Mars and Titan are loaded with aerosols that impact remote sensing observations of their surface. Here we present the algorithm and the first applications of a radiative transfer model in spherical geometry designed for planetary data analysis. We first describe a fast Monte-Carlo code that takes advantage of symmetries and geometric redundancies. We then apply this model to ...
متن کاملOptical Properties of South Pole Ice at Depths from 140 to 2300 Meters
Depth and wavelength dependence of absorption and scattering coefficients at the South Pole AMANDA site were mapped with pulsed and D.C. light sources. The contribution of air bubbles to scattering decreases with depth and disappears at 1.4 km; at greater depths scattering by dust dominates. Peaks in scattering at several well-defined depths are attributed to peaks in dust concentration and are...
